The occasional exception has been a S&W 625 in 45 ACP The 357 magnum can be competitive but doesn't seem to win even with 158 grain bullets To your point, there certainly is a point of diminishing returns by going with a bigger caliber I've seen a 500 S&W used a few times, mostly as a novelty, with limited success The 460 S&W offers zero ballistic gain over the 454 Casull with 300 grain bullets Both list max loads for both at 1,650 FPS With the 240 grain bullets, the 460 clocks in at 2,000 FPS, while the 454 Casull is only 150 FPS slower at 1,850 FPS
